Tiny update on my mission to embrace more European solutions over (mostly) US ones. Maybe some of the things here make someone curious.
Finally was able to replace Microsoft Swiftkey with FUTO Keyboard! ( https://keyboard.futo.org/ ) I couldn’t, for the longest time, find a good replacement for Swiftkey that worked well, and that included FUTO a few months ago. But now? It’s on par and does not randomly connect to the internet for no reason.
Previous migrations:
- ✅ I’ve managed to replace Gmail and Outlook with Proton Mail.
- ✅ Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar with self-hosted Baikal (though I will try a VPS with Nextcloud soon enough).
- ✅ Google News with Flipboard and good old RSS feeds.
- ✅ SmarterASP with Hostinger for hosting random web pages and VPSs on the interwebs.
- ✅ Unsurprisingly, Windows with Linux.
- ❌ Still looking to be more independent from Google Play Store by installing more from F-Droid, but that’s an uphill battle, for now.
- ❌ Still trying to slowly convince people to message me on Signal instead of WhatsApp, but even that is not the best choice overall.
- ✅ Zen Browser over Chrome or Edge.
- ✅ Kagi over Google for searching. Such a better experience.
- ✅ Local shops (online and brick-and-mortar) over Amazon.
- ❌ Still waiting for something to replace Visa and Mastercard (and GPay).
- ✅ Lemmy instead of Reddit. Mastodon instead of Twitter. Pixelfed instead of Instagram. And straight out shut down Facebook.
